CENTER and Shelby County

Shelby County's  crown jewel is nestled on the downtown square in Center, Texas. The 1885 historic Shelby County Courthouse has experienced a complete restoration as it was styled as an Irish castle by architect John Joseph Emmett Gibson, and now serves as a Visitor’s Center. Complimenting the historic courthouse is the historic Shelby County Jail designed and also built by Gibson in 1884. It is the epitome of an 1880’s small town Texas county jail, and now the home of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.

The city of Center was named so because it is in the “center” of Shelby County. From the historic museum to numerous historic sites and markers, from stunning landscapes on Toledo Bend Lake to wildlife areas in the Sabine National Forest, and a one acre sporting goods paradise, there is something for everyone.

The Airport Fly In in May, Sheriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo in June, WHAT A Melon Festival and Frontier Days in July, East Texas Poultry Festival in October, exhibits at the Lakes Area Art League Center, fishing tournaments, and the East Texas Golf Tournament offer fun activities for the entire family throughout the year. A visit around the historic downtown square is a memorable one with shopping, dining, an art gallery, antiques, and a 1920’s restored state of the art movie theatre. Enjoy a walk and picnic in a family atmosphere at the Center City Park with a playground, lake, fishing pier and horseshoe pit tucked away in the Texas Forest Country.
